e continue to collaborate with organizations and groups at the local and national levels on different projects, such as
The Mexico Gender and COVID-19 Observatory, which celebrated its first anniversary in June 2021 with the publication of Nos Cayó el 20: Diagnosis and recommendations of the Gender and COVID-19 Observatory in Mexico, a series of documents that show the different impacts of the pandemic on different issues and populations of women. And also with Marea Verde (the Green Wave, in English), an alliance with which we continue to promote the legal and social decriminalization of abortion via digital and face-to-face campaigns and interventions.
Together with the presentation of the document Abortion under the magnifying glass, we held a workshop for journalists interested in using official Requests for Access to Information regarding abortion, highlighting the importance of having accessible and complete information in reflecting reality around these issues. Fifty-five women and five men participated.
During 2021, legislative discussions were promoted that we could not have imagined just a few years ago, and which led to the approval of decriminalization reforms up to 12 weeks of gestation in the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, Baja California and Colima, adding to the list of places that already recognize legal abortion.
Likewise, we celebrate the inclusion of safe abortion as a priority objective in the reproductive health of women and people with the capacity to gestate in the publication of the “Specific Action Program for Sexual and Reproductive Health 2020-2024” (PAESSR, in English) by the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health (CNEGST, for its Spanish acronym).
The inclusion of safe abortion in the PAESSR makes it clear to all health personnel that abortion is a common reproductive process in women’s and pregnant people’s lives, and therefore it should receive the same attention as, for example, childbirth and puerperium.
The CNEGSR also published «Guidelines for safe abortion care in Mexico», which arose out of the need to create operational frameworks, not just legal framework of the criminal codes, the General Law of Victims and the NOM-046, but also in the PAESSR. These guidelines provide clarity and certainty to all healthcare personnel about how to proceed when a legal abortion is requested.
